Rory Foster trained in New York, Chicago, and London with many renowned teachers including Vera Volkova, Valentina Pereyaslavec, David Howard, Benjamin Harkarvy, and Vincenzo Celli. He was invited to join American Ballet Theatre under the direction of Lucia Chase where he worked with some of the most influential choreographers of our time including Antony Tudor, Agnes de Mille, Alvin Ailey, José Limón, John Neumeier, and Eliot Feld. He later became a principal dancer with the New Orleans Ballet and with the London Ballet Theatre, touring extensively throughout the UK, Europe and the Far East. Following his performing career, Mr. Foster served as ballet master for the New Orleans Ballet and for the Chicago Ballet under the direction of Ruth Page and Frederic Franklin.
Mr. Foster has extensive experience as a ballet pedagogue. He is a Professor Emeritus at DePaul University in Chicago where he was dean of the Barat College Conservatory of Dance. In 2010 his book on teaching was published, ‘Ballet Pedagogy: The Art of Teaching,’ and it has been adopted as a text for numerous university dance departments including the New York University Masters Degree in ABT Ballet Pedagogy. It has received many acclamations including: “A must read for every teacher, students aspiring to teach, parents, and dancers on their way to a career.”—David Howard, International Master Teacher. “An original concept and a work of great necessity in the field of training in ballet. This is the best book on ballet pedagogy I have encountered.”—Rick McCullough, Florida State University.
Mr. Foster has been a guest teacher for professional ballet companies, university dance departments, and pre-professional conservatories both nationally and internationally. Some of his residency and guest teaching includes the Hong Kong Ballet, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Art, New Zealand School of Dance, Folkwang Hochschule (Essen-Germany), Cincinnati Ballet, California Ballet, Nevada Ballet Theatre, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Virginia School of the Arts, Interlochen Arts Academy, The Hartt School, SUNY-Purchase Conservatory of Dance, Cecchetti Council of America, and numerous national dance festivals.
The Department of Ballet is pleased that Rory Foster will be a visiting faculty member throughout the 2012-2013 academic year.
